Throwback Thursday: DMX

Everyone knows DMX so i don’t think i need to do much explaining….

Y’all ready for the weekend?? Party Up (Up In Here)!

And the classic Anthem…

X Gon’ Give It To Ya

Throwback Thursday: Dope Beat

I almost forgot about this song… Boogie Down Productions wrecks it on this track, they mix their hip hop beat with the famous AC/DC sound from Back In Black.  The name says it all.  It’s a dope beat.

Throwback Thursday: Boogie Down Productions

Criminal Minded

OK, first off.  Try and come up with a better name for your hip hop group than this.  Boogie Down Productions.  Yeah that’s what I thought.  It’s not possible is it?

So here is another 1980’s New York City rap group.  They are from the South Bronx.  That’s all the information you need to know in order to figure out that this group contributed to the development of modern day rap.

So for this post, I’m focusing mainly on their first album, Criminal Minded (1987).  This first album consisted of the original group- KRS-One, D-Nice, and DJ Scott La Rock.  Right after the release of this album, DJ Scott La Rock was murdered, and the members of the group constantly changed after that.  Criminal Minded was their most successful album of the five.  This shit is classic 1980’s hip hop.  It’s awesome.

Throwback Thursday: Afu-Ra

Afu-Ra is one of my favorite artists of all time.  This music is perfect for jamming to.  If you don’t have much to do on your to do list for the day and just want to turn up the bass and listen to some awesome music for a while, this is it.  The thing that kills me though is that no one in our generation has even heard of him.  Seriously, people?

If you want to download some of his songs, I would suggest going with his earliest album Body of the Lifeforce.

Here are a few of his songs, starting out with my all-time favorite, Whirlwind Thru Cities.

Throwback Thursday: Mobb Deep

So Mobb Deep is scheduled to come out with a new EP called “Black Cocaine” on November 25, 2011 (which just happens to be Black Friday…).  Honestly thats pretty clever.  He has been around since 1992, so i figured I would throw up some of his older songs to reminisce about.

I linked some of his old albums below for FREE download.  If you don’t already have them, download them and get ready for some Black Cocaine. Yum. There are also some my favorite songs by Mobb Deep linked below.

P.S. I want one of the “Hennesy” shirts from the Shook Ones Pt. II video.

Throwback Thursday Album: The Score by The Fugees

Anyone remember the Fugees?  If not, I’ll fill you in a little bit.  They are a band that plays a cross between hip-hop and reggae.  You still get the sweet hip-hop lyrics with rhymes left and right, but the reggae beats keep the music chill and relaxing.  Great combo if you ask me.  The album “The Score” was released in 1996 and went multi-platinum and won a Grammy.  So I mean, I guess that’s good right?

Here are a few songs from the album to get a taste.

B.o.B at High Point and new single “Strange Clouds”

B.o.B. performed at the Fall Concert here at High Point the other day, and it was definitely the best performance that I’ve seen here so far.  The dude came out with such enthusiasm and was so pumped up to finally get out on the stage.  The concert was supposed to take place out on the main lawn outside, but the weather wasn’t exactly cooperative, so the concert got moved indoors right at the last minute.  But honestly I’m kind of glad it got moved indoors.  It made the whole atmosphere a little cooler.  The lights were better.  The bass was higher.  And the music was blasting.

On another note, B.o.B. just released his new single today featuring Lil’ Wayne.  “Strange Clouds”  has kind of a techno feel to it.  It comes out with the heavy bass and a sort of trippy beat.  Lil’ Wayne works well with B.o.B. in this song.  Definitely the right combination of rappers for this.  Give it a listen .

It’s Throwback Thursday! The Roots: Things Fall Apart

If you want relaxing music with a chill and natural beat behind it, go back to the Roots.  You don’t have to listen to all that auto-tuned shit with ridiculous beats.  Keep it simple.  This is definitely music to just kick back and relax to though, its not music you want to play during the rager you are throwing.  Leave that music selection to Hagn.

The Roots are from Philly, and they are still around today.  They are currently working on their 13th studio album called “Undun”, which should be out by the end of the year, so keep your eyes open.

Celebrate Throwback Thursday with the Ultramagnetic MC’s

Today we are going back to 1988 with The Ultramagnetic MC’s and their first album Critical Beatdown.  I just love the way words flow in these old songs.  You just don’t get that anymore.  Today you just get a totally different kind of flow and swag from the artists.  But this is a sound you just can’t forget.  The beat to all these songs is just awesome.  They were rapping on the streets in the Bronx in the 1980s, so needless to say, they do a good job.  It seems like all of the good rappers from this time period were all from NY.  Anyways, here is the link for the free album download.  And I really suggest listening to this whole album.  It is worth it.

Throwback Concert: Rock the Bells

Alright I know it’s been a while since my last post, but I’m back.  So ever since I got back to school, I’ve been trying to get tickets to the Rock the Bells Concert in Charlotte.  I don’t know if you have heard of it, but basically everyone is gonna be there.  If you like old school hip-hop and rap, THIS IS GONNA BE THE BEST CONCERT EVER.  It features Ms. Lauryn Hill preforming “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”, Nas preforming all of “Illmatic”, Cypress Hill doing “Black Sunday”, Raekwon + Ghostface doing “Only Built For Cuban Linx”, Genius/GZA doing “Liquid Swords”, Mos Def and Talib Kweli are preforming “Black Star”, etc, etc.   All the artists are preforming their albums from back in the day.  So in the spirit of things, I decided to give you all a little taste of some of the old stuff.

First off, here is the Rock the Bells website.  Check the tour schedule for shows near you.  Because this show is going to be 100% worth every penny.
