Old School Beats: Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five

Say hello to Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.  Alright, yeah they look ridiculous.  But this is 1980.   So this must be 1980’s swag, right?  Exactly.  Except this isn’t just swag, this is boss status.  I mean these guys are pretty much entirely responsible for the development of hip hop.  They released the first ever record featuring the record-scratching sound that defined the time period of MC-ing.  And they were the first rappers ever to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.  The fucking Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.  As Rappers.  Right up there with Eric Clapton, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones.  And these guys only released 2 albums.  Crazy Shit.

Their first hit was called “Super Rappin'” and was released in 1979.

Their most influential hit was called “The Message”.  It was a social commentary with a fresh beat behind it that could make anyone tap their feet on the ground.  This song was pretty much the driving force behind all the lyrics of hip hop artists of the day.

Melle Mel, one of the Furious Five, came out with this next song while the group was split up in the mid 80’s.  It turned out to be a hit, peaking at #8 on the charts.  And of course, the name fits the song.

And if you want to see the original mash-up artist, that would be Mr. Grandmaster Funk himself as well.  Dude is a friggin’ boss.

So basically, thank these guys for bringing all the swag they owned and putting it into their work.  Bringing back Old School with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.
